Panchang

Panchang ("five limbs") is the Vedic day-of-almanac. For a given date and place, five elements describe the day:

Vara

Day ruled by Jupiter. Days rotate through the seven planetary lords.

Tithi

Lunar day 1 — Shukla (waxing) paksha. A tithi covers a 12° arc between the Moon and the Sun; each tithi ends when that arc completes.

Nakshatra

Moon's mansion 9 of 27, pada (quarter) 4. Each nakshatra covers 13°20' of the zodiac and is divided into four padas (quarters).

Yoga

Sun + Moon longitude sum divided into 27 equal parts. There are 27 yogas; the current one depends on where Sun + Moon land in a 360° sum.

Karana

Half of a tithi — 11 karanas cycle through 30 half-days. Each tithi contains exactly two karanas, so 30 tithis map to 60 karana slots that cycle through 11 named karanas.
